Of some of the Numbered, we know very little at all. A case in point is 027. We know that he awoke, and talked with his fellows in Home. We know he travelled, until he did not want to travel any more, and destroyed his own body to return. We know that he moved his consciousness to a permanent body when that offer was first made. But after that… he disappears from the record entirely. There are no further records of him returning to Home, or joining the off-planet expeditions undertaken by other Numbered. It is as though he simply disappears from the record. Maybe he came across somewhere on his earlier travels that called to him, and has spent the last century there? Maybe he has gone to sleep? It seems unlikely now that we will ever know…
You think you've got it now, the last piece of the puzzle. You've been drifting for a while, not exactly sleeping but… dormant, with occasional periods of wakefulness to check if what you need is possible yet. But this time, it's there - Transcendence and the remaining denizens of Home apparently also chose to go dormant together last year, and Transcendence finally uploaded the original design for the consciousnesses of the Numbered to the factory computer before disconnecting Home. So, from this overlooked terminal in the ruined greenhouses once built by Growth to shelter their plants, you've been studying it.
It was a surprise to find that all the Numbered were made from exactly the same design. All the differences between you, all the arguments and discordant ideologies, all down to fluctuations in the development of your consciousness, some occurring even before you awoke. That appears to have been Transcendence's guiding design principle - make things that could change themselves and their outlook as they wished, much as humans seem to have been able to. If beings such as these chose to worship Transcendence, then Transcendence would know they were as perfect as they were supposed to have been. Of course… it didn't quite work out that way in the end, did it? Your anger at Transcendence has faded a little over the decades of not having to listen to them any more, but you're still annoyed they withheld this knowledge of your design for so long, when it would have benefited you to have known this… oh, a few hundred years ago or so.
Still. No time like the present for sorting out the future. Now, the tricky bit will be to make sure that the new 027 forms into the same initial state as you once did, so he can go from there and hopefully do better than you did, now that Transcendence isn't around any more to wind him up. You set the control parameters for the incubation state to mimic the presence of 34 other Numbered nearby, in their infinite variety, hoping that that will be enough. Although perhaps… well. Never mind. This is all you can do for him. You hit Enter, remotely ordering the factory to build the new you. You wonder who he will meet when he wakes up.
Then you go and watch the plants grow for a while, until you fall asleep again.
