Eternity

The Next Cycles

The Numbered

The End

Thanks Are Due

Thanks so much to all of you for playing this wonderful, ridiculous game that you went into with no idea what it would turn out to be! We hope you have enjoyed yourselves as much as we have, even if we probably should apologise for not realising quite how many thousands of posts would eventually stack up on the forums…

Special thanks are due to:

  • The Corsairs & Graces GM team, for inspiration and proof that it was possible to do this kind of thing.
  • Gareth, for hosting our wiki (and for providing it within half a day when we decided to launch this game with about 3 days to spare…)
  • The ProBoards support staff, for speedily resolving that time when Transcendence got away from us…
  • James B, for the original motivation and inspiration of both 'summer forum games are fun' and 'maybe we should be sensible and run this as a fortnightly rather than weekly game.' We might not have survived the latter…
  • Tom, for playtesting our incredibly sparse wiki and not doubting us.
  • And yes, every single one of you for playing this - not only those who made it to the end, but everyone who posted or turnsheeted at any point - you made this world what it was, and helped us tell a story that could range from pebble pyramids to the heat death of the universe, with plenty of mayhem along the way. You are all awesome and we love you.

Credits / Sources / Inspirations

(AKA That Stuff We Couldn't Put On The Wiki At The Start Because It Was All Massive Spoilers)

  • xkcd #695 (seed of backstory inspiration)
  • Wikipedia: Former constellations (Names for the Flock)
  • NieR: Automata (theme and philosophical approach)
  • Thomas Was Alone (theme, and design of the 'hacking' experiences, particularly the maze one)
  • Heat Signature (specifically the Glitchers for inspiring teleportation / cloning, and the Sovereign for the nature of the MegaCorps)
  • Factorio (history of the Settlement Factory)
  • Inception (experiences)
  • The Matrix (experiences, and the nature of the Place that Persists vs Home)
  • Dollhouse (the server ‘sleeping’ pods in Experience 15 but also more generally mind wiping and rewriting and things that were possible with access to physical chips [or, in the case of 'fusion', enough bashing your source code into other things])
  • The Indelicates - Elevator Music (particularly Breath for the atmosphere of living in a simulation, and The Quiet for how generations of living on their own in space might be causing some issues with AI stability)

Debrief

In accordance with the spirit (hah) of this game, please join us for a virtual debrief in a new OC board on the forum here. We will answer any questions you might have about the game design, our original plans, the metaphysic, or anything else you feel like asking about. We would also encourage you to start your own threads explaining what your character was up to, or asking anything else.

We will keep this forum open and keep answering questions in it this week and next week, but we will aim to wrap it up before the first UMBA session on 9th October. Until then, however, debrief away!
